The average e-commerce conversion rate is 1–3%. If your Shopify store is getting traffic but not sales, you're not alone — but you are leaving serious money on the table. Here are the seven most common conversion killers we see in our e-commerce audits, and exactly how to fix each one.

Key Stat: A 1% improvement in conversion rate can double revenue on the same traffic budget. Conversion optimisation is often the highest-ROI investment an e-commerce brand can make.

Reason 01

Slow Page Load Speed

Every 1-second delay in page load reduces conversion by 7%. Shopify stores bloated with unoptimised images, excessive apps, and heavy themes load in 4–8 seconds — costing you the majority of your mobile visitors before they even see a product.

✓ Fix

Compress all images using WebP format (50–80% smaller than JPEG). Audit and remove unused Shopify apps — each adds JavaScript weight. Switch to a performance-optimised theme like Dawn or Turbo. Target sub-2-second load times on mobile.

Reason 02

Weak Product Pages

Generic product descriptions, single product images, and no social proof are the fastest way to lose a buyer who was almost ready to purchase. Decision-making at the product page is the most critical moment in the purchase journey.

✓ Fix

Use 5–8 high-quality images per product including lifestyle shots and detail shots. Write benefit-driven descriptions (not just features). Add customer reviews directly on the product page. Include a size/fit guide if applicable. Add an urgency element (stock count, shipping deadline).

Reason 03

Complicated Checkout Process

Every additional step in checkout is an opportunity to lose the customer. Multi-page checkouts, forced account creation, and limited payment options are the top checkout abandonment causes.

✓ Fix

Enable Shopify's one-page checkout. Offer guest checkout — never force account creation. Add multiple payment options: UPI, credit/debit cards, EMI, and Buy Now Pay Later via Simpl or LazyPay. Add trust badges (secure checkout, return policy) near the CTA button.

Reason 04

No Cart Abandonment Recovery

Industry average cart abandonment rate is 69%. Without a recovery system, you're permanently losing 7 out of 10 customers who were close to purchasing.

✓ Fix

Set up a 3-part cart abandonment email sequence: 1 hour, 24 hours, and 72 hours post-abandonment. Include the abandoned cart image and items. Offer a small incentive on the third email (free shipping or 5% off). WhatsApp abandonment flows convert even better than email for Indian audiences.

Reason 05

Insufficient Social Proof

First-time buyers need to trust you before they'll give you their money. Without visible reviews, ratings, and user-generated content, scepticism wins.

✓ Fix

Display star ratings and review counts on collection pages (not just product pages). Add a "customer photos" section with real user photos. Display total reviews count and average rating prominently. Import and display verified reviews from Google or Trustpilot.

Reason 06

Poor Mobile Experience

Over 75% of Indian e-commerce traffic comes from mobile. If your store isn't optimised for thumb-friendly navigation, you're losing the majority of your audience.

✓ Fix

Test your store on a real mobile device (not just a browser simulator). Ensure buttons are at least 44px tall. Keep the Add to Cart button sticky at the bottom of mobile product pages. Ensure text is readable without zooming. Use a persistent mobile cart indicator in the header.

Reason 07

No Clear Value Proposition

If a visitor lands on your store and can't immediately understand why they should buy from you (versus competitors or Amazon), they won't. A vague or stock homepage hero section kills first impressions.

✓ Fix

Your homepage hero needs: a clear, specific headline stating who you are and what makes you different; a one-sentence benefit statement; one primary CTA button; and immediately visible social proof (review count, "2,000+ customers" etc.). Remove anything that distracts from this core message.

Prioritising Your Fixes

If you're short on time, fix in this order: speed → product pages → checkout simplification → abandoned cart recovery. These four changes account for 80% of the conversion improvement potential in most Shopify stores.
